Summary: (Spoiler-free)

Safiyyah’s War takes place in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II and follows Safiyyah, a brave Muslim girl whose father secretly works to protect Jewish neighbors and help them escape. When her father suddenly disappears, Safiyyah learns the truth about his involvement in the French Resistance—and discovers that she must find her own courage to continue the mission.

Inspired by real history, the story highlights forgotten acts of bravery by Muslims who risked everything to save Jewish families during the war.

My Thoughts:

This is one of the most powerful and necessary historical fiction novels for middle-grade readers today. Hiba Noor Khan writes with incredible emotional clarity, weaving together danger, hope, moral courage, and compassion. I was especially moved by the focus on ordinary people choosing to do extraordinary things simply because it was right.

As a future elementary school librarian, I appreciate how this book opens conversations about allyship, bravery, and standing up against injustice—even when it’s frightening. Safiyyah is a relatable, thoughtful heroine whose courage grows page by page. The story is gripping yet accessible, making it a strong entry point for students learning about WWII beyond traditional perspectives.

Themes:

  • Courage in the Face of Oppression

  • Resistance & Moral Responsibility

  • Family, Loyalty & Love

  • Allyship Across Faiths

  • Hope During Dark Times

  • The Power of Ordinary Heroes

  • Empathy & Human Dignity

Why Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan  is Important for Diversity and Inclusion:

This book is a standout example of inclusive historical fiction. Hiba Noor Khan, a British Muslim author, spotlights a lesser-known part of WWII history—the efforts of Muslim people who risked their own safety to protect Jewish families.

Not only does this challenge stereotypes, but it also shows how different communities have stood together across faiths and cultures. It’s a powerful reminder that bravery does not belong to one group. This representation gives Muslim children a vital mirror in a genre where they are often invisible and gives all readers a richer, more truthful understanding of history.

Safiyyah’s War reminds us that history is full of untold stories—stories that challenge assumptions, deepen understanding, and honor courage across cultures. As librarians, we have the responsibility to share books that broaden students’ perspectives and affirm underrepresented voices. Safiyyah’s bravery is unforgettable, and her story teaches readers that small acts of resistance can change lives.
